  1. My Dad - Susan Hook Johnson

My dad lived his whole life in the country and quit school after the 8th grade to help his dad farm and to work as a hired hand for other farmers. I think as the oldest boy of 15 children, he felt an obligation to do that. I remember going to the barn on many different occasions to watch him milk the cows. He knew them all by name.

The only kind of hunting I really remember him doing was coon hunting. He had a coonhound named Mose who was his pride and joy. Mose was a very good dog and a great coon dog. There were several different hunters that offered to buy Mose, but Dad wouldn't have sold him for any amount of money. The only time I ever remember seeing my dad cry was when Mose died.

Dad also had a contagious laugh. Anytime Dad laughed, everyone around him laughed. It was such a great laugh. I wish I had a recording of it to play back on those days when I'm feeling a little down. One of the television shows that would get Dad laughing so hard was the Red Skelton Show. He loved that show and I enjoyed watching it with him just so we could laugh together.

One of my other fond memories is the time spent fishing with my dad. Rodney and I would go out back of our house and dig up earthworms during the day and wait for Dad to come home at night so we could beg him to take us fishing. It usually didn't take much begging and we would be on our way to a friend's pond to spend several hours fishing. Our usual catch would be lots of sunfish and a few bluegills. The best part was just sitting on the banks and enjoying time together while we waited for the fish to bite.
